To fill this gap, this current study aims to examine to what extent language learners experience a change in FLA quantitatively, and what factors cause FLA and contribute to creating psychological safety in learners’ minds. To meet these objectives, 42 Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners took part in this research. This study comprises three survey instruments: a consent form, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) translated into Japanese, and a semi-structured interview. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA indicated that there was a statistically significant change in FLA levels during the academic year 2022. Furthermore, a qualitative data analysis suggests that interacting with peers, instructors’ teaching approaches, and promoting resilience might play an important role in easing EFL learners’ FLA.
