Regarding instructional principles, it is shown theoretically that it is necessary for instructors to establish a safe zone where learners can accept any situation, and that it is necessary to establish instructional methods from the viewpoint of being close to learners. In terms of instructional methods, the analysis revealed that although the three learners had the similar musical experience, the stumbling blocks were different for each of them, and that the learners’ understanding varied when the same instructional method was used, and that onesided instruction was not sufficient. Therefore, the instructional method should be tailored to the learner’s level of proficiency and the instructor’s ability to respond to the learner’s stumbling blocks. The instructional contents consisted mainly of nine items: (1) demo performance, (2) hand clapping, (3) verbal instructions (including onomatopoeia), (4) wrist exercises and physical exercises, (5) presentation of practice methods, (6) video distribution, (7) notations on the music score, (8) singing and understanding of lyrics, and (9) words of encouragement. The results suggest that the construction of more instructional patterns will lead to overcoming the learner’s dislike of music and to the acquisition of independent singing and playing. The reason for this is that the construction of instructional patterns is something that is created in the process of trying to support the improvement of the learners’ skills. Within a limited amount of time, the instructor is able to capture the characteristics of the learner, and provide instruction tailored to the learner’s level of progress and understanding. In addition to improving the technical skills, the instructor also sent encouraging words such as “You can definitely do it” and “Don’t worry,” so that the learners could continue their learning with confidence. In other words, the learner’s self-directed learning of ‘piano hiki utai’ is also about eliminating their anxiety and creating an environment in which they can play and sing with peace of mind, and in order to make this possible, it was considered important for the instructor to continue to find instructional patterns through their own eager and independent learning and for the instructor to be close to the learners.
